I – 65 Closure Update: Truckers Navigate City Streets and Detours

Traffic Chaos in Louisville: I-65 Closure Forces Semi-Trucks
Onto Unsuspecting City Streets

The ongoing closure of Interstate 65 is creating a major headache for Louisville residents and commercial drivers alike. With the vital highway shut down, heavy semi-trailer trucks are bypassing official detours and finding themselves forced to navigate narrow, residential city streets unequipped for massive freight vehicles.

A significant part of the problem stems from delayed technology updates. According to local officials, popular commercial trucker navigation apps are still erroneously showing I-65 as “open.” This digital glitch is actively routing unsuspecting truckers directly into local gridlock, bypassing the intended bypass routes.

Frustrated by the heavy traffic disrupting their community, the Old Louisville Neighborhood Council has taken matters into their own hands. The group has erected a prominent highway billboard delivering a stark message to drivers:

“Louisville streets are NOT made for trucks. Take I-264 during the I-65 closure.”

In response to the mounting infrastructure concerns, the Metro Council has formally submitted an urgent request to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). They are asking the state to intervene and ensure that navigation app developers immediately update their systems to reflect the closure and properly route commercial
traffic onto I-264.
