Indiana lawmakers have passed new language in HB 1200 to tighten CDL requirements and crack down on illegal licensing.
English Proficiency: Every CDL applicant must now demonstrate they can read and understand English. This ensures drivers can read road signs, fill out logbooks, and communicate clearly with law enforcement during a stop.
Legal Status Checks: The Indiana BMV is now required to cross-reference CDL holders (specifically “non-domiciled” drivers) with federal immigration databases.
Mandatory Revocation: If a driver’s legal work authorization or visa expires, the BMV must revoke their commercial license within 15 days.
“Non-Domiciled” Focus: This targets drivers who have a license in Indiana but are not permanent residents or citizens, ensuring their right to work in the U.S. is current.
It’s all about making sure everyone behind the wheel of a 40-ton rig is properly vetted and ready for the road. 🛡️
