Top 10 Biggest Trucking Bottlenecks in The U.S.

Chicago Claims the #1 Spot for the Nation’s Worst Truck Bottleneck in 2026

The results of the 2026 Top 100 Truck Bottlenecks list are in, and Chicago has officially claimed the unenviable top spot for the worst freight congestion in the United States. The annual ranking highlights the severe infrastructure and traffic challenges facing the Midwest’s largest transportation hub and serves as a critical indicator for the national supply chain.

In a recent segment on Fox 32 ChicagoLIVE, Rebecca Brewster, President and COO of the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), sat down with anchor Anita Blanton to break down the data. Brewster explained the methodology behind the rankings and, more importantly, why Chicago’s gridlock is a national concern.

Why This Matters:

  • Supply Chain Strain: Chicago is a vital artery for national freight. When trucks are stalled here, the ripple effects cause delayed shipments across the country.

  • Economic Impact: Time spent in traffic directly translates to increased operational costs for the trucking industry—costs that are inevitably passed down to consumers at the grocery store and retail checkout lines.

  • Environmental Toll: Congestion leads to thousands of hours of engine idling, which unnecessarily burns fuel and increases carbon emissions in the greater Chicago area.

As Chicago grapples with this #1 ranking, the data from ATRI will likely be used by city planners and federal policymakers to prioritize infrastructure spending and highway improvements. Until significant changes are made, carriers passing through the “Windy City” should prepare for significant delays.
